Electric vehicles (EVs) have a history dating back to the 1800s but began to capture global attention in the early 21st century. Their rise to prominence was driven by growing concerns about air pollution and the urgent need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. 

The introduction of EVs was seen as a revolutionary step towards a cleaner, greener future. The promise was simple: vehicles that could dramatically cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the smog-choked skies of urban areas.

But as the popularity of EVs surged, so did the scrutiny. Enthusiasts and critics alike have begun to ask a critical question: Are EVs truly as eco-friendly as they seem?

The Eco-Friendly Aspects of EVs

Zero Tailpipe Emission

Zero tailpipe emissions are one of the most celebrated features of EVs. Unlike traditional gasoline-powered cars, EVs produce no exhaust fumes, significantly reducing air pollution in urban areas. 

The National Library of Medicine calls this “good news for the climate”. Are you wondering why? Because the highest amount of planet-warming CO2 in the US comes from the transportation sector alone – mostly cars and trucks. 

Another benefit of the EV revolution is the possibility of cleaner air and improved respiratory health for the public. By replacing fuel-based cars, EVs have reduced the emission of NO2 and other pollutant gases and particles through their zero tailpipe emission.

This replacement improves global asthma outcomes and will also benefit vegetation in the long run.

Using Renewable Energy As Fuel

Using renewable energy as fuel is a key advantage of EVs, amplifying their eco-friendly credentials. When powered by electricity generated from wind, solar, or hydro sources, EVs can operate with minimal environmental impact.

An Environmental European Agency (EEA) study revealed that the GHG emission of EVs is about 17-30% lower than that of diesel or petrol-based cars.

This shift from fossil fuels to renewables plays a monumental role in limiting GHG emissions. As an added bonus, it also decreases our dependence on non-renewable resources for transportation. As the overall carbon footprint of driving EVs continues to decrease, the grid is bound to become greener.

Are Hybrid Cars Also Eco-Friendly?

Hybrid cars, particularly plug-in hybrids, are often touted as a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional gasoline vehicles. These vehicles integrate an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. It allows them to run on electricity for short journeys and switch to gasoline for longer trips. 

The Washington Post notes that this dual functionality can greatly lower both fuel consumption and emissions. This is especially true for daily commutes and short trips where the electric motor is primarily used.

However, the eco-friendliness of hybrid cars depends largely on how they are used. When driven primarily by electric power and regularly recharged, they offer substantial environmental benefits. 

On the other hand, if the gasoline engine is frequently engaged, it might not be as green as fully EVs. The bottom line is, that while hybrid cars are a step in the right direction, their environmental impact varies based on individual driving habits.

Are EV Batteries Eco-Friendly?

Are EV batteries eco-friendly? This issue is fundamental to the ongoing discussion about the sustainability of EVs. Although EVs do not produce emissions during operation, the manufacturing and disposal of their batteries pose notable environmental challenges.

From the extraction of raw materials to the chemicals involved in manufacturing, the eco-friendliness of EV batteries is a complex issue. Join us as we attempt to simplify it below. 

The Threat of PFAS Chemicals

The threat of PFAS chemicals in EV batteries is a growing concern. TorHoerman Law notes that these chemicals have been granted the “forever chemicals” nickname due to their persistence. They’re not easy to break down in both our bodies as well as the environment. 

Various studies have linked PFAS exposure to a number of serious health concerns, including cancers and liver damage recently. In light of these concerns, many citizens have come forward to file a PFAS lawsuit. If you’ve been exposed to these toxic chemicals – through either water contamination or PFAS-containing products – you’re eligible to join the lawsuit as well.

The association of these dangerous chemicals with EVs was brought to light recently in a 2024 Nature Communications study. Researchers of the study found bis-perfluoroalkyl sulfonimides (bis-FASIs) – a subclass of PFAS chemicals – present in EVs’ lithium-ion batteries. 

This was determined through the air, water, soil, snow, and sediment sampled near the manufacturing plants of these batteries. These were collected from Kentucky and Minnesota in the US, Belgium, and France.

Mining Cobalt and Lithium – The Environmental Toll

Mining cobalt and lithium, crucial for EV batteries, exacts a heavy environmental toll. Extracting these raw materials often leaves scars on the Earth; think of deforestation, water scarcity, and pollution. 

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 70% of the world’s cobalt originates, mining threatens local ecosystems and jeopardizes the livelihoods of communities. 

Moreover, the insatiable demand for these minerals fuels hazardous working conditions for miners. A majority of these mining workers – including children – don’t have any advanced tools at their disposal. Instead, they’re forced to use only hand tools for digging, which poses a grave risk to their health and safety. 

Is It Possible to Recycle EV Batteries?

Fortunately for us and our planet, recycling EV batteries is entirely possible. These batteries contain valuable materials such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel, which can be extracted and repurposed for new batteries or other industrial uses. 

Recycling these materials conserves natural resources and minimizes the environmental effects associated with mining and processing raw materials. Advanced recycling technologies are continuously evolving, making the recycling of EV batteries a vital aspect of creating a circular economy for EVs.

We can call the eco-friendliness of EVs nuanced at the best. While it has its pros – zero tailpipe emission and better air quality – its darker side also puts the environment at risk. Even though the recyclability of EV batteries is a work in progress, the threat of PFAS chemicals is far from being mitigated. 

It is about time the government’s environmental authorities take a close examination of the threats EVs pose and work towards finding their solution.
